About Utah Relay

Utah news from across the state, in one place, with every story linked back to the outlets that reported it.

Who runs it

Utah Relay is built and edited by Charles Max Wood. It is independent: no outlet it links to owns it or pays to appear in it, and it is not affiliated with any of them.

What it does

Utah has a lot of newsrooms, and on any given day several of them are covering the same event. We follow 70 Utah news outlets through the feeds and channels they publish, and group their reports on the same event into a single story. A story page shows every outlet that covered it side by side, so you can see who reported what and read whichever account you prefer.

We do not republish anyone’s journalism. You will see a headline, a short summary in our own words, and a link. The full article is always on the publisher’s own site.

How stories are ranked

The front page is ordered by how widely a story is being covered, how recently, and how much it matters to people in Utah. A story reported by several outlets outranks one reported by a single outlet at the same age. Stories fade as they stop being covered, and a story that has run for several days has to be very widely covered to stay near the top. The top of the page is kept varied so no single outlet or topic fills it. Readers’ hearts count too, but only a little, so a pile-on cannot outrank the day’s real news.

The editor can pin, demote, merge or split stories when the automatic grouping gets it wrong, and can hide anything that should not be here.

How summaries are written

Summaries, categories and tags are written by an AI language model from each article, then capped in length so a summary points you to the story rather than standing in for it. A model can get details wrong. If a summary misstates something, please tell us and we will fix it.

Every headline links to you, and every click we send is counted so we can tell you how much traffic Utah Relay sends your way. If you would like us to stop following your outlet, or to change how your work appears here, get in touch and we will act on it.
